A prolific thief has been sentenced to prison after a series of brazen thefts targeting various shops in Bedford. Police estimate that the individual, identified as Warren Wright, netted thousands of pounds worth of tobacco products and alcohol during his crime spree.

Brazen Daylight Heists and After-Hours Break-Ins

Wright, who is notorious for his daring methods, often committed his thefts in broad daylight. On several occasions, he waited until store employees momentarily vacated counter areas before vaulting over to grab cigarettes and tobacco products—sometimes even with customers present. His audacity didn’t end there; Wright also targeted establishments after closing hours, breaking in to steal valuable goods.

Multiple Offenses Across Bedford Area

The 37-year-old, residing at St Mary’s Street in Bedford, admitted to a total of nine offenses, which included multiple thefts from supermarkets located in Bedford, Stewartby, and Kempston. Additionally, Wright requested for eight further offenses to be taken into consideration, bringing the total number of his criminal activities between December 2023 and June this year to an alarming level.

One supermarket on Queen’s Drive, Bedford, was particularly hard-hit, being targeted four times within a span of six weeks. Such repeated attacks underline the thief’s relentless pursuit of his illicit gains, causing significant financial and emotional strain on the affected businesses.

Justice Served: Jail Sentence and Police Statement

In Luton Crown Court last week (12 July), Wright received a sentence of two-and-a-half years in jail. This verdict marks a significant victory for local law enforcement and serves as a stern warning to would-be criminals.

Commendation for Investigative Efforts

Detective Sergeant Ben Dunckley of Bedfordshire Police’s CID praised the concerted efforts of his team in bringing Wright to justice. “I am really proud of the work the team has done to get this one-man crimewave off our streets. They have pieced together the various offenses, and now Wright will be off the streets for an extended period,” remarked DS Dunckley.

Looking Forward: A Safer Community

The successful apprehension and sentencing of Warren Wright underscore the dedication of Bedfordshire Police to maintaining public safety and curbing criminal activities. Residents and business owners can now breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that a prevalent threat has been neutralised, at least for the foreseeable future.
