The former Bedford High School classrooms could soon see a new lease on life as residential flats. A planning application has been submitted to Bedford Borough Council to convert the properties at 3 and 5 The Crescent, Bedford, into nine one-bedroom flats.
Supporting Bedford's Housing Strategy

The applicants have emphasised that this scheme will contribute significantly to Bedford’s housing goals, aligning with the Bedford Borough Council’s Housing Strategy for 2021-2026 and the long-term Local Plan 2050. This development is set to bolster the council's commitment to providing quality housing in the area.
Revitalising a Historic Conservation Area
The redevelopment aims to 'breathe fresh life' into a distinguished conservation area. The Crescent, already known for its 'good quality' apartments, will further benefit from these planned enhancements. The buildings at 3 and 5 The Crescent were last used in 2011 as classrooms for Bedford High School, with their most recent purpose being adult education and supporting facilities.
However, the historic edifices have seen little demand due to their age. The transformation into modern flats promises to rejuvenate these structures while preserving their iconic frontage, as the plan specifies no alterations to the existing site facade.
No On-Site Parking
Given the limited space around the building, there will be no on-site car parking available. However, the applicants argue that the strategic location of the site mitigates the necessity of private car usage. They have proposed that future residents could purchase season tickets for the nearby car parks, including those at Allhallows, Queen Street, and Adelaide Square, to accommodate their parking needs.
Community and Future Plans
For those interested in more details, additional information can be found on the council’s planning portal under reference number 24/01421/FUL. The deadline for submitting comments or objections is Friday, 23 August 2024.
It is worth noting that similar plans to convert 7 The Crescent into flats (reference 24/01038/FUL) received approval earlier in July, indicating a positive trend toward the redevelopment of this historic area.
