From BMX beginnings to the grandest arena in sports, Ethan Vernon's journey is one marked by sheer determination and relentless pursuit of excellence. The former Bedford School student is gearing up for his second Olympic appearance in Paris 2024, aiming to clinch his first Olympic medal for Team GB in the Team Pursuit event.

Aiming Higher after Tokyo

Ethan Vernon was a part of the squad that secured a seventh-place finish in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. However, he has larger goals in sight for Paris. He’s looking to build on his World and European gold medals, setting the bar higher for himself and his team. The Team Pursuit event at Paris 2024 commences on Monday, 5th August, and Vernon is poised to make a significant impact.

Riding the Wave of Success

Since his breakout year in 2022, Vernon has consistently demonstrated his prowess on the international stage. He has claimed both individual and team golds at various championships. His triumph at the Apeldoorn Velodrome in the Netherlands earlier this year, coupled with the Track Nations Cup title in Canada, positions him as a strong contender for Olympic glory.

The 100-Year Good Omen

A century ago, the Olympic Games were held in Paris, and history appears to be repeating itself in a favorable way for Bedford School alumni. In 1924, Bedford students collectively secured twelve medals, including two golds. Most notably, Harold Abrahams won the 100-metre sprint in a time of 10.60 seconds, an achievement immortalised in the film 'Chariots of Fire'.

Another Bedfordian, Jack Beresford, began his Olympic journey in rowing, eventually becoming one of Britain's most decorated Olympians with medals in five different Games. His record stood until Sir Steve Redgrave broke it 92 years later.

With such rich history behind him, Ethan Vernon leads Team GB's Team Pursuit at Paris 2024, holding a crucial role for their success.

Discussing the intricacies of Team Pursuit, Ethan told BBC Look East, "It’s a really fine line getting that right," underlining the importance of precision for the lead-off position. He further elaborated, "The team pursuit is a true test of strategy, speed, and endurance. It is about which team has prepared the best and put their resources in the right places."

Gold may not be guaranteed, but the seventh-place finish in Tokyo has only fueled Team GB's determination. The quartet, including Ethan, is in excellent form as they aim for the pinnacle of success.

Building on Team GB's Cycling Success

Ethan Vernon's ambitions come in the wake of a successful start for Team GB at Paris 2024. Tom Pidcock retained his Olympic Champion title in the mountain bike race, showcasing resilience even after a puncture on the fourth lap.

The Men’s Team Pursuit event will unfold in the National Velodrome in Paris on Monday, 5th August, precisely at 16:27, with the finals scheduled for Wednesday, 7th August, at 17:04.
