The Running Club Helping Transform Bedford’s Fitness and Business Communities

Every Sunday morning, runners, joggers, and plodders gather outside Bridges Espresso bar on Riverside North, Bedford, for their routine 5K run. This gathering is organised by PlodSquad, a free amateur running club that has grown into a thriving community, transforming both the fitness culture and local businesses in Bedford.

A Welcoming Community for All

PlodSquad, affectionately known as ‘PLSQ’, welcomes individuals of all fitness levels, from seasoned runners to those who prefer a more leisurely pace. Founders Fabio Testa, Charlie Cordell, Rosie Gee, Alex Goulding, Jake Williams, and Brogan Samara have cultivated an inclusive environment where everyone can participate, no matter their running experience. The name 'PlodSquad' captures the spirit of the group perfectly: sprint, jog, or plod—there’s a place for everyone, rain or shine.

The founders believe that PlodSquad’s inclusivity is key to its popularity. What started as a small group of six friends and keen runners has now grown to nearly 70 runners at the start line each week. This growth underscores the demand for a non-judgmental space where new runners can challenge themselves alongside more experienced peers.

Embracing Wellness Beyond Running

Beyond physical fitness, PlodSquad prioritises mental well-being. Members of the group have lauded the sense of community and friendship they’ve found, attributing improved mental health and overall quality of life to their participation. "As I struggle with mental health to this day, the only difference is where I used to use drugs to numb the pain, I now use exercise as a new tool to help me overcome the struggles of day-to-day life," said founder Jake Williams. He extends a supportive hand to anyone needing to talk about mental health issues, during or outside PlodSquad times.

The group also aims to support those who have been away from fitness for extended periods. Nic, for example, rediscovered her love for running after a 20-year hiatus. "After joining PlodSquad and going every week, I’ve slowly started to increase my running time and distance. If I can do it at 61, then anyone can,” she shared.

Supporting Bedford’s Small Businesses

PlodSquad isn’t just about running; it’s also about supporting the local economy. Each Sunday, the running club brings 30-40 customers to Bridges Espresso bar, providing a significant boost to the business. This symbiotic relationship benefits both the runners and the local business community.

For those interested in participating, PlodSquad meets weekly on Sundays at 9:30 am at Bridges Espresso bar for a 5K run around the river, and on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm at Priory Marina for a 10K, or a shorter 5K route. Social interactions before and after runs over coffee further strengthen the community spirit.
